Frequently-asked Questions about Written Exams:

Are there any written exams in ICS Canada programs?

  • Yes. Although, the majority of exams use the multiple-choice question format, certain programs also employ “subjective” exams in which the student submits written work according to clearly-defined exam guidelines. These exams can range from sending in worksheets in the Accounting program to critiquing a hypothetical counselling case in the Counselling Skills program.

Does that mean I have to write a term paper as part of my ICS Canada studies?

  • There are no multi-page research papers—of the kind required of college students—in ICS Canada programs. Generally, written work consists of short-answer responses to specific questions/scenarios or one to two page answers to examination case-studies.

Can I use the internet when submitting my written work?

  • Most subjective exams can be submitted to the school by the net from a student’s homepage.
  • At this point a word of caution regarding the use of the internet must be stressed. Students sometimes search the web for “model” answers to help them with their exams. Unfortunately, lifting a model answer from the web and submitting it as the student’s own work is what is known as plagiarism—a very serious academic offence—which can result in dismissal from the ICS Canada program; as such, students should never use the internet to help them answer exam questions!
  • Students should never turn in work that is not their own or give unauthorized help on graded projects and/or exams.

Do I have to hand-write my written work?

  • The school will accept handwritten work, provided it is legible but we prefer that subjective exams be typed through a word-processing program. If the student wishes to submit an exam-file done in word-processing format, the required program is Microsoft Word. In certain instances we do accept scanned files in PDF, jpeg or JPG.

Will I get my written exam back?

  • Absolutely! The graded exams are returned to the student –usually in a zip file with grader comments and a solution-sheet if applicable
